Application Process

University of Louisville Main Campus

Freshman Admissions

Prospective UL freshman students must be admitted to lower division through the UofL Office of Undergraduate Admission website. Students will select major code NU BSN.

Admission Standards for admissions into the lower division of Nursing has three options:

  1. Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 along with an ACT Composite of 22 and ACT Math sub-score of 22.
    OR
  2. Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 along with Accuplacer test scores, instead of ACT or SAT scores. Minimum Accuplacer test scores required for admissions into lower division are: Math QRAS score of 263; Reading score of 250.
    OR
  3. Test Optional admissions requirements are a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.5; completion of 4 years of high school English with a minimum grade point average of 3.0; and a rigorous high school math curriculum. Must earn all A and B grades in math courses. Must include one of the following math courses during junior or senior year:
  • AP Calculus
  • AP Precalculus
  • Dual Credit College Algebra
  • Dual Credit Pre-Calculus
  • Dual Credit Calculus

Transfer Admissions

Students who have 24 or more transferable credit hours from a regionally accredited institution are considered transfer students. To be eligible for admission to the lower division of the nursing major, a transfer student must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum 2.8 cumulative undergraduate GPA of all colleges attended.

  • Does not have 2 or more NURS prefix grades of C- or below from previous institutions.

  • Was not previously dismissed from a Nursing program.

Students who meet the criteria to apply as transfer students may apply to the lower division of Nursing by visiting the Office of Undergraduate Admission - Transfer Services website. Please select major code NU BSN.

Transfer Students from KCTCS Schools and ULtra with 24 or more transferable credit hours are asked to email your appropriate advisor to request an evaluation of coursework for lower division. All transfer students are required to be advised prior to registering.

Transfer students with 12-23 hours earned (does not include dual credit) at a regionally accredited institution may be admitted if they meet the following criteria:

  • 3.0 GPA (excluding dual credit courses)
  • Grade of C or higher in an equivalent College Algebra course

Internal Transfers

Students who are currently enrolled at UL may transfer into the lower division of Nursing by completing a change of major request through their ULink account. All Change of Major requests are reviewed at the end of the semester term.

To be eligible for admission into the lower division of the nursing major, a change of major student must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum 2.8 cumulative undergraduate GPA of all colleges attended.

  • 12 hours completed at UL.

  • Does not have 2 or more NURS prefix grades of C- or below from previous institutions.

  • Was not previously dismissed from a Nursing program.

  • No more than one failure with a grade below C, in the following courses: ENGL 101 or 102, MATH 111 College Algebra, BIOL 257, BIOL 258, BIOL 260, BIOL 261, BIOL 262, 264, 265, CHEM 105 or Nutrition.

Upper Division

Deadlines:

  • May 1st for fall term
  • September 15th for spring term

Application Procedures for the Upper Division

Admission to upper division is selective. Students interested in upper division must meet the following minimum admission criteria to apply:

  • Admission to the lower division of Nursing through the Office of Undergraduate Admission.
  • Minimum 2.8 cumulative college GPA.
  • Minimum 3.0 nursing program GPA.
  • Student must be in the last semester of completing all lower division coursework at time of application. * Students applying for fall admission may finish remaining lower division course work the summer prior to the fall semester to which they are applying.

High School Direct Admission

Deadline: November 15th

The School of Nursing offers 10 Direct Admission spots to graduating high school seniors each year. The minimum requirements to apply are as follows:

  • A minimum high school grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted).
  • Minimum composite ACT score of 25 or SAT 1200.
  • Minimum Math ACT sub-score of 25 or SAT MSS 590.
  • First-time freshman application on file with UL Office of Admission. Student must be admissible to the lower division of the BSN program.

Freshman Guaranteed Early Admission

Deadline: April 1st

The School of Nursing offers 40 Guaranteed Early Admission spots for UL first time freshmen each year. The minimum requirements to apply for this are as follows:

  • Successful completion of NURS 101 freshman orientation course.
  • Successful completion of the first year of full-time coursework with a minimum 3.25.
  • Completion of CHEM 105 and BIO 102 (or their equivalents) with a minimum grade of B.
