Kohl's is shutting down 27 stores across 15 states this weekend, a major downsizing move that reflects broader challenges in the U.S. retail sector. Newsweek previously reported that the closures are part of a strategic reevaluation as the company seeks to optimize its store footprint while expanding its partnership with Sephora. USA Today also noted that the company is planning to cut 10% of its corporate workforce and end Amazon returns in some stores.
The department store chain, based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and which operates more than 1,100 locations, announced the closures earlier this year as part of a shift toward enhancing profitability.
A Kohl's spokesperson previously told Newsweek that "it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."
Why It Matters
The announcement comes as Kohl's, like many legacy department store brands, faces increased pressure from e-commerce competitors and changing consumer habits. USA Today cited the company's most recent earning report where Kohl's reported a 9.4% drop in sales for the fourth quarter of 2024 and a 7.2% decline for the full year.
Other major retailers that have announced store closures include Forever 21, Joann Fabrics, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.

What People Are Saying
Kohl's new CEO CEO Ashley Buchanan said: "Our customers expect great product, great value, and a great experience from Kohl's. I am confident that the areas we identified will deliver on what customers want and expect from Kohl's."
Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, previously told Newsweek: "While Kohl's is closing just 27 stores nationwide, a number that makes up less than three percent of its retail locations, it's easy to see why many would label this yet another event that's a sign of the times for retail. It all comes down to foot traffic at these locations, and in our current economic climate, retailers like Kohl's are more likely to close underperforming stores quickly compared to retailers in past decades."
What's Next
Kohl's expects to complete the closures by the end of March 2025. The company has not confirmed whether more stores will be shut down later this year, but signaled in its most recent earnings call that it continues to "closely monitor" store performance and broader economic conditions.
Kohl's next quarterly earnings report is expected in May, which may offer further insights into the company's store portfolio strategy and whether additional locations are at risk.
